Background
In response to the evolving landscape of electrification including electric vehicles (EVs) and the potential impacts on the energy grid, Ameren Illinois is deploying three pilot programs to explore potential new programs and alternative methods of encouraging electrifications while being cognizant of impacts on the rate base. To navigate this challenge, Ameren Illinois enlisted Electric Power Engineers (EPE) asl strategy experts to spearhead the development of three beneficial electrification pilot programs aimed at optimizing electrification impacts and solutioning for both the utility and its customers.
Challenge
The objective is to create pilot programs that not only addressed the technical and logistical aspects of electrification and specifically EV charging but also aligned with Ameren Illinois’s commitment to efficiency, cost savings, and environmental sustainability.
In collaboration with Ameren Illinois, EPE developed three specific pilot programs: Managed EV Charging, Submetering, and EV Energy Management Systems (EMS), each designed to explore different facets of EV integration.

Approach
By engaging EPE as strategy experts for the development and deployment of these electrification pilots, Ameren Illinois is addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by the growing EV market.

Solution
These pilot programs are poised to contribute significantly to the utility's efforts in promoting sustainable energy use, improving customer service, and supporting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Through this effort, Ameren Illinois is moving to a future where EV charging is integrated seamlessly into the energy ecosystem, benefiting all stakeholders.
