EPE's Network Model Management Case Study

Background

A major Publicly Owned Utility (POU) in Canada currently utilizes many software systems to manage their utility operations and planning. The POU was formed through mergers and acquisitions of smaller utilities which has resulted, in the short-term, with an amalgamation of redundant systems. The systems are currently being rationalized over time to maximize historical investments and minimize rate-payer costs.

Challenge

The increasing volume of distributed energy resources (DERs) seeking grid interconnection has caused the utility to operate and plan for much more complexity and variated circumstances. Regulatory and community expectations for faster DER interconnection has obviated historical processes and tools for DER interconnection and operation due to the volume of data, number of forecasting scenarios, redundancy of systems, and lack of scalability.

Approach

EPE supported the streamlining of data management across operational and planning systems by defining the functional and non-functional requirements for an integrated system to enhance data-driven decision-making capabilities.

Solution

The requirements were accompanied by documentation mapping the data architecture, defining user roles, and analyzing whether to implement the software platform on-premise or hosted in the cloud. The project deliverables will be utilized to issue a procurement of software and services for Network Model Management.
