Background
PacifiCorp is an electric power company serving the western United States, doing business as Rocky Mountain Power, serving Utah, Wyoming, and southeastern Idaho, leveraging federal funding via a Department of Energy grant to undertake an ambitious project titled Utility Managed Distributed Energy Resources Intelligent Community (UDERMS). The project aimed to integrate "behind the meter" Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) with various types of buildings to optimize grid services and enhance building energy efficiency. Targeting a demonstration of 8.26 megawatts (MW) of flexible loads, the project sought to showcase significant energy savings, support the integration of renewable resources, and develop viable business models for nationwide replication.
Challenge
The UDERMS project encompasses multiple technical and managerial challenges, including grid service development, energy efficiency assessments, cybersecurity, and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, the project requires meticulous planning and execution across five budget periods, spanning from initial modeling and design to market transformation and best practice dissemination.
