Background
Heart of Texas Electric Co-op (HOTEC) was incorporated in 1937 to provide electricity to rural areas of Central Texas. The Co-op has grown to more than 19,000 meters and over 25,000 meters served by nearly 4,000 miles of line. Historically and in the present time, Central Texas is an area that experiences severe weather events. In light of these external factors, HOTEC seeks to modernize its systems to improve employee safety, service reliability and resiliency, and energy affordability.
Challenge
With the advancement of technologies, including system interoperability and cloud-based systems, HOTEC found that its collection of on-premise legacy systems presented more challenges than opportunities. Each system had limited capabilities, only specializing in narrow use cases such as outage or distribution planning. As a result, the individual systems created organizational silos. A system may contain good data, but when siloed, it undermines overall data quality for the whole organization and restricts effective collaboration among departments.

Approach
HOTEC wanted its systems to better support their focus on safety, efficiency, and member service. EPE introduced ENER-i®, a cloud-based utility system integration and interoperability platform.

Solution
Using ENER-i, HOTEC centralized critical utility data, thus ensuring it can be analyzed for informed decision making across the organization. Through a web application interface, users can access integrated information and diverse data points from across key systems to perform a plethora of different use cases on the platform. These systems include geographic information system (GIS), advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), fleet, customer information system (CIS), and others.
