Electric Power Engineers (EPE), in collaboration with Grid Strategies through the Connected Grid Initiative, contributed to a new report examining how regional transmission planners can evaluate the benefits of transmission investments under FERC Order 1920.
Issued in May 2024, FERC Order 1920 established a new framework for proactive, long-term regional transmission planning. At its core, this landmark order introduced seven required benefit evaluation metrics for candidate transmission solutions.
The first report in this series, Modeling the Order 1920 Benefit Metrics, marks the opening phase of a broader effort to advance practical approaches to long-term regional transmission planning. The analysis examines current transmission planning practices across North America, highlighting both the similarities and important differences across regions, and how existing practices compare against the new FERC Order 1920 requirements.
A second report, planned for release this summer, will focus on illustrative examples using mock transmission portfolios to evaluate benefits, key observations, implementation challenges, and practical insights from applying these methodologies.
