Electric Power Engineers (EPE) is proud to announce that a team of its engineers has been named a winner in the Rural Track of the 2026 U.S. Department of Energy’s Feeder of the Future Prize. The American-Made competition recognizes innovative approaches to addressing current and future energy challenges across rural, suburban, and urban communities.
The winning team, led by Cody Davis, Liming Liu, and Yuxuan Yuan, developed an approach to siting, sizing, and valuing battery energy storage systems (BESS) using a hierarchical co-optimization framework that integrates long-term distribution planning with real-time operational control. The solution is designed to maximize the value of energy storage while strengthening feeder reliability and increasing load and distributed energy resource (DER) hosting capacity, providing a practical approach to meeting the needs of the rural grid of the future.
The award reflects EPE’s continued commitment to grid modernization, energy innovation, and resilience, particularly as rural communities navigate growing reliability challenges.
