In October, ERCOT proposed a new Planning Guide Revision Request (PGRR-120), introducing implications for generator interconnections to its transmission grid. The proposed changes prevent generators from interconnecting if doing so would result in the generator being radial to a series capacitor under N-1 contingency conditions.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

If approved, PGRR-120 will require developers to carefully evaluate their interconnection points, paying particular attention to the placement of series capacitors in the grid.

ERCOT has proposed that these changes aren’t effective until after April 1, 2025, giving developers with in-process interconnection requests or modifications time to proceed under the existing rules and offering a temporary window for projects already underway.

How Can EPE Help?

At EPE, we understand the challenges developers face in navigating regulatory updates and their potential impact on project timelines and feasibility. Our team is well-equipped to support developers with:

  • Siting Studies: Helping identify optimal locations for generator interconnections that comply with the new constraints.
  • Point of Interconnection Selection: Evaluating and recommending points of interconnection that minimize risks and maximize project efficiency while adhering to ERCOT’s evolving guidelines.
  • Regulatory Guidance: Providing insights and updates on the progress of PGRR-120 and how it may affect your projects.

Next Steps

With this proposal still under review, it is crucial for developers to stay updated and plan ahead. Taking a proactive approach to project siting and interconnection strategies will help ensure compliance with ERCOT’s evolving requirements while minimizing potential disruptions.

At EPE, we’re here to help you navigate these changes and keep your projects on track. Contact us for tailored solutions and expert advice to adapt to ERCOT’s proposed updates.
