Recap: 2025 California Energy Transition Summit — NV Energy Applications Open This Month

By Selene Sanchez

Last month, our WECC-CAISO team had the opportunity to attend the 2025 California Energy Transition Summit in Sacramento, California. The summit gathered industry experts to strategize and share their candid thoughts on navigating uncertainties and new initiatives regarding resource adequacy, grid upgrades, project siting, interconnection, and the needs to achieve Energy Transition in California.

California continues to advance its energy markets through policy and regulation, focusing on reliability, resilience, flexibility, and affordability. In the summit’s opening panel, industry leaders acknowledged the regulatory and policy changes that have been implemented thus far and discussed the need for stakeholders on all sides to work together to create needed change.  As the state works through the backlog in its transmission and interconnection processes, it’s becoming clear that California will require an additional 7,000 MW of generation per year in order to meet its 2045 goals, according to CPUC President Alic Reynolds.

Data Centers in Focus

The overwhelming trend in 2025 across regional and national conversations has been all things data centers. And at the summit, it was no different. Key takeaways from both panel discussions and our client conversations:

  • Accommodating New Load: New large load interconnections require costly and time-consuming upgrades; conversations focused on strengthening partnerships between data center developers, utilities, regulators, and the ISOs to better prepare. There are plans to expedite project movement by limiting queue intake, specifically in CAISO.
  • Understanding Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: Processes for new large load interconnections vary and are evolving. Discussions centered around how to better address new load interconnection requests, current policies under development, and the role regulatory plays with meeting the demand for more generation.
  • Impact on Decarbonization Goals: Topics around increased load demand and generation requirements also included in-depth discussions about the impacts to decarbonization goals and corporate sustainability mandates.

The recurrent theme throughout the summit addressed the need for two things in order to meet the 7.5 GW per year energy needs of the state of California: diverse resources and additional transmission capacity.

  • A final note from our team from the summit: we were all surprised by the statistics around battery capacity increase. According to experts at the summit, California increased BESS power by over 3 GW last year alone.

NV Energy Applications Open This Month

If you’re planning a renewable energy project or considering participation in the 2025 NV Energy application process, start now. Industry leaders at the summit discussed NV Energy’s official announcement their 2025 application window for interconnection requests. Running from June 15, 2025, to July 29, 2025, this critical window will provide an opportunity to submit applications for connecting renewable energy projects, battery storage systems, and other advanced energy solutions to NV Energy's grid.

Preparing for the interconnection application requires technical precision, thorough documentation, and adherence to strict deadlines.
